Do you know the safe recommended distance between trees and powerlines? It’s crucial to assess if it’s time for a trim before it’s too late.

Fire damage from branches sparking in dry conditions or serious injury from electrocution are real risks. Tree owners must ensure a safe distance of at least 1.5 metres from low voltage lines or 4 metres from high voltage lines. Remember, as a tree owner, you could be liable for any damage caused by trimming or felling trees.

What are you responsible for as a tree owner?

If your trees or vegetation are located near powerlines and within growth and fall zones – it is your responsibility to ensure the power network is protected with regular professional pruning.

As per The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003: Tree owners of tall ‘fall distance’ trees that are not covered by the regulations are potentially liable for any damage caused to lines or associated electricity network equipment, including any damages that may be claimed by affected third parties.

  • You are breaking regulation if your vegetation is within the 1.5 metres growth limit zone for the lines that go to your house from the street pole.
  • You could be liable for any damage to the electricity network if your trees damage lines or equipment.
